Fiber Laser Cutting VS. Traditional Cutting

With the rapid development of the sheet metal processing industry, the processing technology is also changing with each passing day. Among them, the traditional cutting machines mainly include CNC shearing machines, punching machines, flame cutting machines, plasma cutting machines, and high-pressure water cutting machines. While laser cutting is a high-end technological revolution in sheet metal processing. It breaks through the limitations of traditional cutting machines, brings safer, more convenient and efficient work effects, and makes cutting precision reach a higher standard.

Below I will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional cutting methods as well as the laser cutting technology. And then you can make a clearly simple comparison with them.

I. Laser Cutting

Advantages

1. Higher Performance & Safety

Compare to the traditional cutting machines, metal fiber laser cutters have much higher working performance and safety. Therefore, the metal fiber laser cutting machines have the advantages of fast speed, high efficiency, and constant operation. More importantly, it has no need to maintain the fiber laser metal cutter, which largely saves a lot of costs. And it also provides the strong power for continuous production, improves work efficiency, and ensures better work quality.

2. Higher Accuracy

CNC metal fiber laser cutting machine has higher precision than the ordinary cutting machines. Besides, it has better processing effects, which avoid material waste posed by poor cutting accuracy and save a lot of production costs. So it greatly raised the producing efficiency and achieve better cutting results.

3. Higher Efficiency

Due to the high flexibility, fast cutting speed, high production efficiency, and short production cycle, it is easy to fast and accurately laser cut both simple and complex machine parts in only one time.

4. Better Effects

The fiber CNC laser cutting machine for sale has the features of good cutting quality, easy operation, and a narrow cutting slit. That’s why it can realize CNC laser cutting products with no cutting force, no deformation, and no tool wear. In addition, it also has good material adaptability, which can realize automatic laser cutting layout and nesting. Meanwhile, it improves the material utilization and benefits, and reduces the pollution and production costs.

Disadvantages

  1. Limit cutting thickness: the metal laser cutter is designed for cutting thin metal sheets within 6mm.
  2. Restricted materials: metal CNC laser cutter can only cut metals rather than nonmetals.
  3. Hurt eyes: the short laser waves will do harm people’s eyes. So you are required to wear protective glasses when using it.
  4. Expensive laser generator: it has more difficulties to purchase and maintain the fiber laser generator for its expensive price and long return period.

II. Flame Cutting

Flame cutters mainly cut thick steel panels with over 40mm. However, it has the disadvantages of material waste, wide slit, slow speed, and large thermal deformation, which is only suitable for rough machining.

III. CNC Shearing

Although the CNC shearing routers can cut sheets up to 4m long, they can only be used for sheet metal processing that requires straight-line cutting.

IV. Plasma Cutting

Plasma cutting is similar to flame cutting because they both have a large heat-affected zone. But it has faster speed and high accuracy. However, it also has some shortcomings such as expensive consumables, large thermal deformation, large slope, and less precision.

V. Punching

Punching machines have higher flexibility in curve processing. A punching machine has one or more punching heads in a round, square, or other shapes, which can process some sheet metal workpieces at one time. On the one hand, it can fast cut simple patterns and thin sheets; on the other hand, it has poor punching ability ofthick steel sheets. Even if it can do it, the steel surface will collapse, which will cost the mold.

VI. High Pressure Water Cutting

High pressure water cutting is a CNC cutting technology using a high-speed water jet doped with emery to cut metal sheets. Because it has no limit to the cutting materials, it can cut many kinds of special materials such as ceramic, glass, aluminum, copper, etc. And it can cut some materials with a thickness of up to 100mm. However, the high pressure water cutting technology has the weakness of slow cutting speed, poor environmental protection, and high consumables.
